A practical bioeconomy solution for food and agriculture

Black soldier flies present a practical bioeconomy solution for food and agriculture. Their larvae efficiently convert food waste into high-protein livestock feed and valuable organic fertilizer.

These insects are a small yet powerful ally in the fight against waste, significantly contributing to sustainable practices.

One egg a day is feeding the future — Bhutan's game-changing school meal initiative

School meals are a vital source of daily nutrition for many children. In Bhutan, FAO's "One-Child, One-Egg" initiative enhances these meals by adding one egg daily to school feeding programs.

Launched in 343 pilot schools, reaching around 32,000 students, this program aims to improve children's access to protein and micronutrients. It also supports local farmers and fosters more sustainable agrifood systems, demonstrating how small additions can make a significant difference.

Black Soldier Fly: Turning waste into value

Black soldier flies (BSF) provide a practical bioeconomy solution, converting food waste into high-protein livestock feed and organic frass fertilizer. This closes nutrient loops, reduces resource pressure, and minimizes urban waste, making BSF a powerful ally for zero-waste initiatives.

The BioDAF II project, "Circular bioeconomy in Abidjan: From food waste to fork," scales this approach. It transforms urban food waste into agricultural inputs, supports livelihoods, and improves waste management. Learn more about FAO's sustainable bioeconomy efforts here.
