Improving Collaboration between Veterinarians and Veterinary Paraprofessionals

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Veterinary Association (WVA), and African Veterinary Technicians Association (AVTA) host a webinar on strengthening collaboration between veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals (VPPs) in Nigeria, Uganda, and South Africa. It shares results from FAO’s Empowering Veterinary Paraprofessional Entrepreneurs project.

Vets and VPPs have complementary roles. Stronger collaboration improves service coordination, expands access for livestock farmers, and enhances disease prevention, surveillance, and response. This builds resilient animal health systems, sustainable livestock production, improved livelihoods, and food security.

In Baidoa, FAO and the European Union, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, established market-oriented greenhouse gardens for women vegetable producers. These greenhouses enable year-round production of high-value crops through efficient irrigation, increasing yields and incomes. The gardens also serve as learning hubs, building practical skills in protected agriculture and agribusiness, reinforcing women’s roles in local food systems and household livelihoods. Mohammed’s Story: Starting over in the Gaza Strip

In Gaza, over two years of conflict have severely impacted herders' livelihoods, limiting access to feed, veterinary care, and income. Sheep breeder Mohammed, who lost his family and livelihood, is determined to rebuild for his surviving daughter. Despite injuries, he used FAO's conditional cash and emergency feed to sustain his herd and hire help, now seeing a path to recovery.
