* Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/UNFAO * Instagram - https://instagram.com/fao * LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/fao * TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@fao * Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/fao/ * Weibo - https://www.weibo.com/unfao © FAO: http://www.fao.org #SDGs #Agenda2030 #GlobalGoals
Bivalve molluscs represent a resource of particular importance due to their economic, nutritional, and social significance for numerous countries in the region. However, because they are filter-feeding organisms, they can accumulate pathogenic microorganisms, chemical contaminants, and marine biotoxins, making it essential to have surveillance, monitoring, and sanitary control systems in place to manage the risks associated with their production and consumption in a timely manner. Therefore, the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean held the webinar “Food Safety in Bivalve Molluscs,” a technical forum aimed at strengthening capacities and exchanging experiences on priority food safety issues in the region. The module addresses the monitoring of marine biotoxins and bivalve mollusc health programs, covering technical tools, risk management approaches, and national experiences related to strengthening control systems. The Strait of Hormuz crisis is disrupting global energy and fertilizer markets, posing severe risks for millions living in extreme poverty. Ben Davis and Marco Knowles from FAO advocate for social protection as a more effective response than costly government subsidies.
They challenge the notion that cash transfers are mere handouts, presenting rigorous evidence that rural households productively invest them in agriculture, education, and local economies. Targeted social assistance, they argue, outperforms subsidies in both efficiency and reach. For further details, consult the policy brief: The role of social protection in addressing the impacts of the 2026 conflict in the Middle East, and the full transcript: Transcript.

Mozambique's 2,800 km coastline sustains many fishing communities, providing vital food and income. However, overfishing, environmental changes, and limited infrastructure threaten this way of life. The FAO-led Smart Fisheries Co-management project, funded by the Republic of Korea, addresses these challenges. For more information, visit: FAO Smart Fisheries Co-management
The project fosters collaboration among government, institutions, and communities to promote sustainable fisheries and improve co-management systems. It also supports practical livelihood solutions, reducing pressure on aquatic resources while diversifying income sources for communities.

Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is a fundamental right for Indigenous Peoples, recognized by the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Since 2015, FPIC has been mandatory for all FAO projects and activities involving Indigenous Peoples.
Despite its importance, FPIC faces implementation challenges. Experts recently discussed these common obstacles and outlined necessary steps during the FPIC Donors Task Force meeting.
