Protecting people and animals from Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in Afghanistan

Before Eid al-Adha, the sale and slaughter of millions of animals in Afghanistan heightens the risk of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a serious disease spread by infected ticks. As animals can carry the virus without symptoms and there are no vaccines available, prevention is crucial.

With support from the UK and the World Health Organization, FAO collaborated with Veterinary Field Units in 20 provinces to spray livestock markets, treat animals, and raise awareness among herders and traders. This initiative exemplifies the One Health approach, protecting both human and animal health.

Strengthening food security and resilience for drought affected communities in Somalia

Somalia is highly vulnerable to climate change, experiencing severe droughts and flooding that disrupt agriculture and livestock, leading to displacement and food insecurity. In response, the FAO, supported by the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), has implemented climate-resilient interventions benefiting 5,700 households in Beletweyne and Baidoa districts.

This video showcases these efforts in Baidoa, focusing on saving lives, sustaining livelihoods, and reducing displacement during ongoing drought conditions. Subscribe to the FAO channel here.

Rebuilding livelihoods and nutrition of earthquake-affected families in eastern Afghanistan

In response to the August 2025 earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, the FAO, through the French Initiative for Food Security and Nutrition (FIFSAN), is assisting over 3,000 households to restore livelihoods and enhance food security and nutrition. Utilizing a One Health approach, the FAO provides cash assistance, livestock protection, and home gardening packages, all designed with a focus on nutrition.

The project promotes the production and consumption of nutrient-rich foods, such as eggs and vegetables, while offering training on dietary diversity and animal health. This initiative aims to improve nutrition outcomes and resilience, particularly for women, children under five, and pregnant and lactating women.
