Inspectors in Dakar, Senegal, are undergoing hands-on training to conduct live vessel inspections. Supported by FAO, the GEF-funded Common Oceans Tuna Project, and ICCAT, this initiative equips them to check documents, examine fishing gear, and verify catches. The goal is to build crucial skills for detecting illegal fishing and preventing illicit catches from entering the market.

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing severely threatens marine biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, and livelihoods. Ten years after its entry into force, FAO’s Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) empowers countries to strengthen port controls and international cooperation, effectively closing the net on illegal fishing worldwide.
