In Afghanistan, backyard poultry provides families with nutritious eggs and income, particularly benefiting women who can manage this livelihood from home. The FAO combines birds, feed, and equipment with training on poultry management, hygiene, and disease prevention, linking nutrition and livelihoods with animal health through a One Health approach.

FAO's evidence shows the importance of these connections: children with less diverse diets are 2.7 times more likely to be acutely malnourished, while milk and eggs help combat malnutrition and food poverty. In 2026, FAO prioritized women-headed households for backyard poultry activities, supported by the UK, France, the EU, and the Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan.
