The Story of the Jeans Redesign

The fashion industry's "take-make-waste" model is highly wasteful and polluting. A 2017 Ellen MacArthur Foundation report revealed that a truckload of garments is landfilled or incinerated globally every second.

Transforming fashion requires a circular approach, beginning with initiatives like the Jeans Redesign. Over 80 denim experts developed guidelines ensuring jeans are used longer, easily recycled, and produced sustainably, benefiting both the environment and garment workers.

Leading participants, including Gap and H&M, are already implementing these guidelines. Learn more about the Jeans Redesign project here.

Transforming the fashion industry

The fashion industry's current take-make-waste model is highly wasteful and polluting. To thrive, it must transform into a circular economy where clothes are used more, made to be remade, and sourced from safe, recycled, or renewable inputs, ensuring they never become waste.

The vision for a circular economy for plastic

The current use of plastics is highly wasteful; clean-ups and recycling alone cannot solve pollution. We need a circular economy for plastic that designs out waste, keeps materials in use, and prevents pollution. This vision for plastic packaging has six key points. Solving Plastic Pollution | Narrated by Sir David Attenborough & Dame Ellen MacArthur

Solutions to plastic pollution are within reach, preventing a future where oceans contain more plastic than fish. Sir David Attenborough advocates for a circular economy for plastic: eliminating unnecessary items, innovating for safe reuse, recycling, or composting of essential plastics, and circulating materials to prevent waste.

A Circular Economy for the USA

The circular economy, a model focused on minimizing waste and maximizing resource utility, offers a sustainable alternative to traditional linear systems. It emphasizes reuse, repair, and recycling, aiming to keep products and materials in use for as long as possible.

In contemporary America, the integration of circular principles presents both opportunities and significant challenges. While some industries are adopting innovative closed-loop systems, widespread implementation requires substantial shifts in policy, infrastructure, and consumer behavior.

This discussion explores the current landscape of the circular economy within the United States, examining its evolving presence, potential for growth, and the obstacles hindering its broader adoption across various sectors.

Cities as catalysts for the transition to a circular economy for food

New York, London, and São Paulo, partner cities in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Food initiative, are exploring the critical role of urban centers.

Thought leaders and innovators from these cities are examining how cities can catalyze the transition to a circular economy for food.

The role of design in the transition to a circular economy for food

Chefs and food service companies profoundly influence food's nutrition, flavor, and environmental impact. Their role is crucial in shaping sustainable practices.

Four global chefs and two leading food service executives will discuss the vital role of food creators in transitioning to a circular economy for food.

Designing circular products

IKEA is actively integrating circular design principles into its core design process. This fundamental shift aims to embed sustainability from the very beginning of product development.

Circular design focuses on minimizing waste and maximizing resource use throughout a product's lifecycle, from creation to end-of-life.

Consequently, anticipate new products and services in the coming years that reflect these sustainable practices, demonstrating IKEA's commitment to a more circular future.

How to use creativity to find solutions

Many companies primarily rely on technical and engineering expertise for their circular economy initiatives. This often focuses on the structural and operational aspects of sustainability.

However, integrating creativity into this journey can unlock significantly faster and more impactful innovation, driving greater success.
