New milestone: 10,000 extractions of river waste

Without intervention, these materials would have otherwise entered our oceans.

Their successful diversion prevented significant marine pollution.

If all goes well, the Gulf of Honduras could stay clean for the first time in decades

Our mission is to restore the Gulf of Honduras to its pristine condition.

We achieve this by intercepting plastic before it reaches the ocean and conducting data-driven coastal cleanups to remove existing pollution.

World Cleanup Day 2025

We reflect on the significant impact achieved by local communities and partners.

Their dedicated efforts successfully cleaned up beaches, mangroves, and coastlines, making a lasting difference.

Our Interceptors' impact in Kingston, Jamaica

This year, we intercepted over 2,000 tons of trash from Kingston's gullies, preventing it from entering the Caribbean Sea.

This crucial removal restores the marine environment and positively impacts local fishing communities, whose catches were previously undermined by plastic pollution.

Working towards cleaner oceans

September marked a period of significant activity for The Ocean Cleanup. The team continued its vital mission to remove plastic pollution from the world's oceans and rivers.

Key efforts focused on System 002 (Jenny) operations within the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, successfully extracting substantial amounts of plastic debris. Preparations also advanced for upcoming river cleanup initiatives, expanding the scope of their environmental impact.

These ongoing operations underscore the organization's unwavering commitment to fostering a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.

Preventing trash from reaching the ocean and cleaning it up is not impossible.

Interceptors collect trash AND data for upstream change

The Ocean Cleanup tackles plastic pollution by intercepting it in rivers, preventing it from reaching our oceans. This buys crucial time as upstream solutions, addressing the entire plastic lifecycle from production to disposal, are developed.

Our Interceptors not only collect plastic but also vital data on global emissions. This data is actively provided to governments and policymakers to drive systemic change. Concurrently, we clean up existing pollution, like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, preventing its degradation into dangerous microplastics.

Every kilogram of plastic prevented from entering the ocean is a victory for ecosystems, coastal economies, and future generations. Learn more: theoceancleanup.com

40,000,000 kg of trash are no longer polluting our rivers and oceans.

So far, so good.

Analyzing our plastic catch from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Last week, we collaborated with @SustainableCoastlinesHawaii to analyze 12,000 kg of plastic. This debris was collected in 2024 using System 03.

Our objective is to identify the sources and geographic origins of this plastic. We will also compare data from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with plastic found on Hawaii's shorelines.

Is the plastic pollution problem unsolvable? We don't think so.

This Halloween, dress up as a "ghost net" from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It's a creative and impactful way to raise awareness about ocean pollution.

How we are tackling plastic pollution in Panama City

Our team, partners, and local communities are collaboratively tackling plastic pollution. In Panama City, we've partnered with Marea Verde Panama, utilizing research and cutting-edge technology to map waterways and reduce river pollution before it reaches the ocean. This effort is part of our 30 Cities Program, which aims to prevent up to one-third of all river plastic emissions from entering the ocean.

By understanding how plastic moves through local waterways, we create lasting social, economic, and environmental benefits for the people who live there. Learn more about our mission, stay updated, and support our work at theoceancleanup.com. Follow us on social media: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X.

How we are tackling plastic pollution in Panama City

Addressing plastic pollution in rivers is a critical, collaborative effort. Our team works closely with partners and local communities to tackle this pervasive issue, which often presents unexpected challenges.
