In mountainous countries like Bhutan, microclimates vary greatly over short distances, meaning nearby fields can yield vastly different results even with the same care and effort. To help farmers, extension officers, and planners navigate this challenge, the Bhutan Agro-Ecological Zoning (BAEZ) tool was developed under FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative alongside national partners. By analyzing and layering complex data on climate, soil, moisture, and terrain, BAEZ moves beyond simple elevation mapping to identify exactly which crops are best suited for specific areas. Crucially, as the climate changes, this geospatial tool projects shifts in crop suitability under future scenarios, allowing researchers and investors to plan ahead strategically. By putting the right crop in the right place, BAEZ translates advanced data into better decision-making, supporting climate resilience and a sustainable agricultural future for Bhutan.
