Saving Florida Panthers

Florida panthers, with likely fewer than 200 remaining, are confined to shrinking habitats in southwest Florida. Development isolates them, forcing dangerous crossings and increasing threats to their survival.

A new large-scale project now threatens nearly 5,000 more acres, promising more roads, vehicle strikes, and deadly conflicts over diminishing space.

The Center for Biological Diversity and partners are challenging federal approvals in court to stop this destruction. Please support our fight to protect these panthers before it's too late.

Anticipating Hope

Oromia and Somali regions faced a devastating 2020-2022 drought, the worst in 40 years, causing nearly seven million livestock deaths, rangeland depletion, and livelihood loss. Despite recent rains, recovery remains slow, with 3.7 million people at risk from forecasted below-average rainfall in March-May 2025.

With USD 1.26 million from the Government of Sweden, FAO implemented an anticipatory drought mitigation project. Targeting 56,500 households (282,500 people) and over 4.5 million livestock, FAO vaccinated 6.17 million animals, trained staff, and distributed feed. These efforts led to a 45% drop in livestock mortality, doubled milk production, a 79% decrease in poor food consumption, and a 54% reduction in negative coping mechanisms.

ESA Success Story: Brown Pelican

Brown pelicans, once decimated by the feather trade and toxic pesticides, made a remarkable recovery. Following the U.S. ban of DDT and habitat protections under the ESA, their populations rebounded, leading to their full removal from the endangered species list by 2009.

Leading up to Endangered Species Day on May 15, we're highlighting marine animals protected by the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Join us in defending this landmark law and species like these: https://oceana.ly/ESA
