Women's Fossil Fuel Phaseout Forum: Halting Extraction and Advancing a Just Transition | WECAN

On April 25, 2026, the Women’s Earth and Climate Network (WECAN) hosted the Women's Fossil Fuel Phaseout Forum in Santa Marta, Colombia. Titled "Halting Extraction and Advancing a Just Transition," this significant event took place ahead of the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels, showcasing WECAN's advocacy.

The forum featured two crucial panels. "No Extraction in the Amazon" highlighted Indigenous women leaders, including Aura Tegria and President Olivia Bisa Tirko, protecting forests and communities. A keynote by Susana Muhamad, Special Envoy to the Fossil Fuel Treaty, preceded "Women in Action for a Just Transition," which brought together activists like Yuvelis Natalia Morales Blanco and Xiye Bastida. The event underscored diverse women's leadership in global climate action.

Tackling ghost gear in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

While Interceptors can stop most river-borne plastic from reaching the ocean, lost fishing gear presents another significant threat. The scale is immense; for instance, lost longline nets alone could stretch 750,000 km, enough to reach the moon and back.

To address this, we are conducting extensive research to understand its origins. We have also joined the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) to actively contribute to shaping policies and initiatives that tackle this critical problem.

Proyecto Zonificación Agrícola del Riesgo Climático (ZARC)

The Central American Dry Corridor faces significant agricultural challenges from prolonged droughts and intense rains. To address this, FAO, the Brazilian government (via ABC/MRE), and the Ministries of Agriculture of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras are collaborating on a project. This initiative, part of the Brazil-FAO South-South Cooperation Program, focuses on "Agricultural Zoning of Climate Risk (ZARC) and water resource management." Its objective is to develop strategies that build resilience and foster inclusive transformation across the region.

De Guatemala a Svalbard: salvaguardando el patrimonio nacional y comunitario de semillas

Guatemala has made a historic first deposit of over 930 seed accessions into the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, the world's most secure backup facility for crop diversity. This crucial step safeguards the nation's agricultural biodiversity, including fundamental crops like maize, beans, squash, amaranth, and teocinte.

This significant deposit resulted from an emergency intervention and a long-term alliance between Guatemala's national germplasm bank and communities in the Cuchumatanes region.

La bioéconomie en action : transformer les déchets en valeur avec les mouches soldats noires

Black soldier flies (BSF) offer a practical solution to transform organic waste into valuable resources for food and agriculture. The BioDAF II project in Grand-Bassam, Côte d'Ivoire, converts urban organic waste into protein-rich livestock feed and nutrient-rich fertilizer. This bioeconomy initiative strengthens food systems, reducing reliance on imported feed and chemical fertilizers.

BSF farming also creates income opportunities for vulnerable communities, especially women and youth, fostering more efficient, local, and sustainable agriculture. Learn more: FAO Bioeconomy.

Alaska has confirmed a plan to kill an unlimited number of bears across 40,000 square miles, including near national park borders. Game agents will shoot bears from helicopters. This controversial initiative aims to boost a struggling caribou herd, despite a lack of scientific evidence that bear culling will be effective or address the caribou's underlying issues.

The Center for Biological Diversity has sued to stop this cruel and illegal plan. Your support is vital to help protect Alaska’s bears.

L’approche “One Health” pour l’alerte précoce de la Fièvre de la Vallée du Rift en Tunisi

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is an emerging threat to animal and human health, and regional economies. To boost early warning and preparedness in Tunisia, FAO partnered with national veterinary services. They held a workshop to calibrate the RVF Decision Support Tool (RVF DST), building national capacity for risk monitoring, data analysis, and early warning interpretation.

A field visit simulated veterinary intervention post-alert. This exercise tested intersectoral coordination, rapid response, and emergency procedures for epidemiological and entomological investigations.
