Green Jobs: Empowering Palestinian Youth

Palestinian youth, especially young women, face alarmingly high unemployment and poverty. Limited job opportunities and a mismatch between education and labor market needs hinder access to decent work, impacting purchasing power and food security.

The FAO, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and funded by Denmark, is tackling this by promoting sustainable "green" jobs in the agrifood sector. The project strengthens youth skills, supports green enterprises, and engages various partners to empower young women and men in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This fosters decent employment, builds resilience, and contributes to a sustainable agrifood system.

The Work We Do - Ep2. Women and Youth in Agrifood Systems. Lauren Phillips

This episode of The Work We Do features Lauren Phillips from the FAO, who discusses the critical role of women and youth in transforming agrifood systems. The conversation explores women's contributions, persistent gaps in land, finance, and opportunities, and why progress remains uneven despite decades of policy reform. It also addresses youth participation, the global challenge of youth unemployment—disproportionately affecting young women—and the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

The episode further examines the financing gap in agrifood systems, making an economic case for investing in women and youth. Such investments are crucial for driving inclusive growth, resilience, and food security. Key FAO reports are referenced throughout the discussion.

Integrated Pest Management in Central Asian Countries and Türkiye to reduce pesticide use

Addressing obsolete Soviet-era pesticides is an urgent priority in Central Asia and Türkiye. The FAO and GEF "Lifecycle Management of Pesticides" project tackles this challenge, promoting sustainable agriculture to safeguard health, restore land, and build a cleaner future.

Implemented across Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Türkiye, the project embeds Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This has significantly reduced pesticide use—70% in Türkiye and 80% in Kazakhstan—without sacrificing yields. The initiative also strengthens national capacities through training and technical guidelines, demonstrating that a healthier agricultural future is achievable through innovation and partnerships.

A father, a poultry farm and Bangladesh’s fight against antimicrobial resistance

Bangladesh is tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by reforming ciprofloxacin use in poultry. A documentary shows farmers, like Kurban Ali, adopting improved hygiene and biosecurity after FAO training, replacing preventive antibiotics.

This shift combats environmental contamination and rising resistance in bacteria like E. coli, causing UTIs, where ciprofloxacin resistance exceeds 80%. Oversight by the Bangladesh AMR Response Alliance and prescription monitoring have led to a 50% nationwide reduction in poultry ciprofloxacin use in three years.

This initiative, supported by the Fleming Fund, shows early signs of reduced resistance, contributing to a One Health approach. Learn more about AMR work: https://www.fao.org/ectad/asiapacific/our-focus/antimicrobial-resistance/en
