Ms. Lia Nicholson discusses wealth creation as a top priority in Africa, noting that historical development was carbon-intensive. Amid global net-zero targets, she outlines three low-carbon development scenarios for Sub-Saharan Africa: jobs-for-emissions, clean industrialization, and leapfrogging to a services economy.
Nicholson is optimistic that 8 billion people can live sustainably. She advises governments and companies on environmental policy, currently supporting four West African cities with C40 to develop climate action plans for resilience and net-zero emissions. A Yale and Scripps alumna and award recipient, her insights were shared at a TEDx event. Learn more at ted.com/tedx.

Jakarta's peak hour traffic creates stress for both motorists and pedestrians, with sidewalks often misused by motorcycles and vendors, endangering those on foot. Alfred Sitorus, an avid cyclist and co-founder of the Jakarta Pedestrian Coalition, discusses efforts to protect pedestrian spaces.
Established in 2011, the coalition arose from the question, 'who does the sidewalk actually belong to?' Their goal is to return sidewalks to their rightful owners through campaigns like 'sidewalk sightseeing,' advocating for National Pedestrian Day, and conducting social audits to ensure public facility quality.

Plastic pollution presents a global challenge. A new non-catalytic pyrolysis technology, grounded in thermodynamics and quantum mechanics, offers an innovative solution. This process transforms plastic waste into powerful fuels, fundamentally shifting our approach to plastic, waste, and energy.
The underlying principle is that all plastic can be repurposed by converting matter and energy. Driven by a passion for social impact, Andoni leads Petgas, a Mexican startup. Petgas is developing this technology and market to convert plastic waste into clean, potent fuels.
