Circular Economy in Cities

Cities are crucial for advancing the circular economy, unlocking economic, environmental, and social benefits. By 2050, most people will live in cities, which currently consume vast resources, generating significant waste and emissions under a linear "take-make-waste" system. A circular economy offers a vital path to rethink resource use, supporting city priorities and prosperity.

The "Circular Economy in Cities" project explores opportunities in urban systems (buildings, mobility, products), guiding city governments on transition strategies and policy.

Four Ways to Introduce the Circular Economy

Explore the circular economy, a fundamentally different approach to design, manufacturing, and operations. Four experts from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation will present various ways to introduce this concept.

They will provide practical examples of the circular economy in action. Attendees are invited to share their own methods for explaining this transformative idea and engage in discussion.

Remanufacturing Components, Reimagining The Economy

Remanufacturing offers clear benefits, yet remains a niche practice. Our guest will discuss its potential to triple by 2050, enabling better design, material, and energy choices for the future.

The show will also explore criticisms of conventional economic growth. Our guest argues we should stop trying to enlarge the economy, and instead learn to "make ourselves at home with this wealth." This involves considering implementation, ensuring inclusivity, and convincing policymakers.

Bringing the Circular Economy in Cities to Life

Cities globally are adopting circular economy principles to build thriving, livable, and resilient futures. These principles are integrated into various policies, from planning guidelines and public procurement to citizen and business awareness campaigns. The aim is to leverage technology for economic development, job creation, and CO2 reduction.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation's cities team supports key cities in this transition. A live broadcast will feature representatives from these leading cities, sharing their progress.

Biosphere 2: The World's Largest Earth Sciences Experiment

In 1987 Arizona, scientists created Biosphere 2, a 3-acre domed facility designed to mimic Earth's living systems without external aid. Early experiments, where crews lived inside, faced oxygen loss and food shortages. Despite initial failures, Biosphere 2 now conducts some of the world's largest earth science experiments, offering vital insights into natural systems for global challenges.

We will also speak with participants from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's "From Linear to Circular" program. Forty-four young professionals and students recently completed a week-long study on the circular economy. Discover their experiences, motivations, and how they will apply their learning to their studies and careers.

Designing Renewable Energy to Last

The future energy system will be 100% renewable, a goal potentially achievable sooner with the right incentives. Yet, simply adopting renewables isn't sufficient. Our technology must be designed for repair, reuse, and multiple cycles to ensure true sustainability.

Join our studio guests to explore the opportunities and risks of this renewable transition. We will also feature Professor Lou Yongqi of Tongji University, a leading circular designer from China, who will discuss how new design principles can reshape one of the world's largest economies.
