The Circular Economy
The fashion industry's "take-make-waste" model is highly wasteful and polluting. A 2017 Ellen MacArthur Foundation report revealed that a truckload of garments is landfilled or incinerated globally every second.
Transforming fashion requires a circular approach, beginning with initiatives like the Jeans Redesign. Over 80 denim experts developed guidelines ensuring jeans are used longer, easily recycled, and produced sustainably, benefiting both the environment and garment workers.
Leading participants, including Gap and H&M, are already implementing these guidelines. Learn more about the Jeans Redesign project here.
The fashion industry's current take-make-waste model is highly wasteful and polluting. To thrive, it must transform into a circular economy where clothes are used more, made to be remade, and sourced from safe, recycled, or renewable inputs, ensuring they never become waste.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a UK charity, accelerates this transition towards a circular economy through business, learning, insights, and communications. Explore our work and catch up on previous content.

The current use of plastics is highly wasteful; clean-ups and recycling alone cannot solve pollution. We need a circular economy for plastic that designs out waste, keeps materials in use, and prevents pollution. This vision for plastic packaging has six key points. Walter Stahel, a globally recognized pioneer of the circular economy, will join Amanda Ravenhill. Ravenhill is the Executive Director of the Buckminster Fuller Institute and co-founder of Project Drawdown, both dedicated to regenerating Earth's ecosystems and combating climate change.
We will engage them in a discussion on systems change, highlighting recent successes and identifying crucial future developments.
Solutions to plastic pollution are within reach, preventing a future where oceans contain more plastic than fish. Sir David Attenborough advocates for a circular economy for plastic: eliminating unnecessary items, innovating for safe reuse, recycling, or composting of essential plastics, and circulating materials to prevent waste.
