In this episode, Stephanie Kelton explores Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) and its insights into how money and the economy truly function. She challenges common misconceptions surrounding government deficits, often linked to negative outcomes like rising taxes or economic instability.
Kelton questions whether these issues stem from deficits themselves or from governmental decisions. MMT proposes that deficits can be strategically utilized to foster job creation, drive innovation, and advance a regenerative, circular economy.
Design is crucial for the fashion industry's shift to a circular economy, as over 80% of product environmental impacts are determined at this stage. Unlike traditional design, which focuses solely on the end-user, circular design adopts a broader perspective, considering the entire system.
Achieving a circular fashion industry demands unprecedented collaboration. In this session, contributors to the Foundation’s upcoming Circular Design Guide for Fashion book will explore what circular design means for the industry.

The fashion industry's "take-make-waste" model is highly wasteful and polluting. A 2017 Ellen MacArthur Foundation report revealed that a truckload of garments is landfilled or incinerated globally every second.
Transforming fashion requires a circular approach, beginning with initiatives like the Jeans Redesign. Over 80 denim experts developed guidelines ensuring jeans are used longer, easily recycled, and produced sustainably, benefiting both the environment and garment workers.
Leading participants, including Gap and H&M, are already implementing these guidelines. Learn more about the Jeans Redesign project here.
The fashion industry's current take-make-waste model is highly wasteful and polluting. To thrive, it must transform into a circular economy where clothes are used more, made to be remade, and sourced from safe, recycled, or renewable inputs, ensuring they never become waste.
