Independent analyses by NASA and NOAA confirm that Earth's global surface temperatures in 2019 ranked as the second-warmest since 1880. Temperatures were 2°F (1.1°C) warmer than the late 19th century, second only to 2016.

Syukuro Manabe delivered his Nobel Prize lecture, "Physical modelling of Earth’s climate," on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. Professor Thors Hans Hansson introduced him.

Manabe shared the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics with Klaus Hasselmann. Their work was recognized for "physical modelling of Earth's climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming."

The prize, awarded for "groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex systems," also saw Giorgio Parisi receive the other half for his discoveries on disorder and fluctuations in physical systems.

Professor Stefan Rahmstorf recently delivered a compelling lecture titled "Why the Ocean is Important to Everyone."

His presentation underscored the critical role marine ecosystems play in influencing global climate, weather patterns, and biodiversity. Rahmstorf highlighted the ocean's vital importance for sustaining both human well-being and the planet's overall health, emphasizing the urgent need for conservation.

Much like pandemic mitigation, combating climate change requires difficult global cooperation. The emergence of new climate-altering technologies further complicates this, raising critical questions about governance, leadership, and ethics.

The Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative (C2G) addresses these challenges. For three years, C2G has engaged global decision-makers across governments, the UN, and civil society. They advocate for effective, inclusive governance of emerging climate technologies, urging proactive risk management and transparent global monitoring before events escalate.

Sir David King, former chief scientific adviser to the UK government (2013–2017), discussed the governance of Arctic climate-altering technologies with the Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative (C2G).

At the 2019 Arctic Circle Assembly on October 10th, Sir David participated in two C2G sessions. There, scientists, policy experts, and civil society representatives explored critical questions concerning the Arctic's future.
