Using nature's genius in architecture by Michael Pawlyn

Fringe Urbanism: Untapped Potential for Sustainable Suburbs by Nico Larco

Professor Nico Larco presented "Fringe Urbanism: Untapped Potential for Sustainable Suburbs" as part of the UO-Portland Architecture Lecture Series on January 20, 2010.

Larco's lecture explored the ongoing transformation in urban peripheries, where social constructs and physical realities are colliding. He emphasized the significant potential of suburban redevelopment to adapt to evolving societal needs and promote more sustainable forms of growth.

Amy C. Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School, presented "Clashing Cultures in Pursuit of Sustainability in the Built Environment" as part of Harvard Thinks Green 2.

Professor Edmondson joined Harvard's faculty in 1996 after earning her PhD in Organizational Behavior. She teaches leadership and organizational learning in MBA and Executive Education programs, focusing on human interactions that foster successful enterprises. She is also the author of *Teaming: How organizations learn, innovate and compete in the knowledge economy*, published in May 2012.

Smart Sustainable Cities -

Swedish ICT is leading a VINNOVA-funded project to develop a generic information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure for Stockholm Royal Seaport. This initiative, titled "Smart ICT for living and working in Stockholm Royal Seaport," focuses on enabling sustainable living in the city's new district.

The project brings together approximately a dozen companies from the telecom and construction sectors, along with the City of Stockholm. This collaborative effort aims to establish advanced ICT solutions for the area.

Ikea has significantly embraced sustainability, equipping its stores with solar panels and wind turbines, and stocking shelves with LED lighting and recycled cotton. This transformation is driven by a new imperative, as Chief Sustainability Officer Steve Howard states: "Sustainability has gone from a nice-to-do to a must-do."

A Glorious Revival, Portland Oregon

The Hallock & McMillan Building, constructed in 1857, is Portland's oldest surviving brick commercial building. Located at 237 SW Naito Parkway, it was designed by Absalom B. Hallock, with cast-iron elements manufactured by Phoenix Iron Works (San Francisco).

Portland developer John Russell has purchased the building and is currently restoring it to its original glory.
