Teaching Gambian oyster harvesters how to swim
January 12, 2026

FISH4ACP, an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) implemented by FAO and partners with EU and BMZ funding, promotes sustainable fisheries and aquaculture across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. In The Gambia, it enhances the mangrove oyster value chain to boost food security and incomes for rural communities, ensuring economic growth aligns with environmental sustainability and social inclusiveness. For more information, visit fao.org/fish4acp.

A key project in The Gambia is a swimming program, led by the Gambian Navy, teaching women oyster harvesters to swim. This initiative helps participants overcome their fear of drowning, making the oyster sector safer and more attractive.
