{"id":732,"date":"2011-10-03T01:49:53","date_gmt":"2011-10-03T01:49:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?p=732"},"modified":"2011-10-05T00:38:06","modified_gmt":"2011-10-05T00:38:06","slug":"user-generated-content-fit-to-publish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?p=732","title":{"rendered":"User Generated Content Fit to Publish &#8211; Part I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s the <em>New York Times<\/em> as content maker, the role we are all familiar with, and channel, the role we assume, but do not label, especially with the tv-like word, channel.<\/p>\n<p>In the last week the <em>New York Times<\/em> demonstrates a shift that&#8217;s going on with user generated content from all bad to, well, interesting. Let&#8217;s take a look.<\/p>\n<p>Front page <em>New York Time<\/em>s &#8211; photography with cell phone. Video example is of pepper spraying police officer which was all over the news this last week.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-734\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?attachment_id=734\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-734\" title=\"New York Times Cellphone Photo\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/New-York-Times-Cellphone-Photo.png\" alt=\"New York Times Cellphone Photo\" width=\"618\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/New-York-Times-Cellphone-Photo.png 618w, https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/New-York-Times-Cellphone-Photo-300x212.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a>And then there was the &#8220;homemade&#8221; video that made it on to <a title=\"Exposing Wall Street\" href=\"http:\/\/video.nytimes.com\/video\/2011\/08\/01\/arts\/100000000976700\/exposing-wall-street.html\" target=\"_blank\">their video channel <\/a>(page) for a series about love and relationships which while not political, is social and cultural and a good start to incorporating citizen-powered online video into a mainstream channel.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-735\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?attachment_id=735\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-735\" title=\"Screen shot 2011-10-02 at 6.25.07 PM\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screen-shot-2011-10-02-at-6.25.07-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen shot 2011-10-02 at 6.25.07 PM\" width=\"621\" height=\"551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screen-shot-2011-10-02-at-6.25.07-PM.png 621w, https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screen-shot-2011-10-02-at-6.25.07-PM-300x266.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And the video by the Times\u00a0 (not clear if producer is on staff or not) that&#8217;s news about a performance art piece featuring naked performers has the look and feel of user generated content and addresses, er, transparency.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-736\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?attachment_id=736\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-736\" title=\"Screen shot 2011-10-02 at 6.31.19 PM\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screen-shot-2011-10-02-at-6.31.19-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen shot 2011-10-02 at 6.31.19 PM\" width=\"641\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screen-shot-2011-10-02-at-6.31.19-PM.png 641w, https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Screen-shot-2011-10-02-at-6.31.19-PM-300x256.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hope the schools of journalism and communication are paying attention to this because writing it is not, fact checking it need not be, and when it comes to citizen-powered, video content it&#8217;s carpe diem or, well, get left behind.<\/p>\n<p>We see the opportunity to pair a sustainability channel with sustainability-related social networks and subscriber bases for kick starting citizen-powered online video as part of the sustainability movement.\u00a0\u00a0 Cause marketing will never be the same. And journalism?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>User generated content is creeping out of the shadows and throwing off its bad rep for being all talking dogs and guitar playing chipmunks &#8211; just look at the New York Times this last week.
