{"id":2187,"date":"2018-01-28T17:22:18","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T01:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?p=2187"},"modified":"2018-11-13T11:51:06","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T19:51:06","slug":"the-soul-of-sustainability-and-the-opioid-epidemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?p=2187","title":{"rendered":"The Soul of Sustainability and the Opioid Epidemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">I haven&#8217;t posted anything to this blog for sometime.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2223 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sustainability-awareness-200-pixies-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><br \/>\nMy commitment has not waned to increasing sustainability awareness and advancing the voices of those acting on behalf of Mother Earth and her children.\u00a0 We continue to add these voices to<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/Jacqueline_Novogratz_and_The_Acumen_Fund\/75\/0\/\">EarthSayers.tv<\/a> and are seeking partners to expand the availability of our content on websites that share our commitment.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><br \/>\nConnecting<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Rather, my sustainability work turned out to not only include ten years of curating the voices of sustainability from across the globe, but five years of living in a caring community, learning,\u00a0 getting involved in addressing the issue of safety for all of us, and reframing the neighborhood from an &#8220;entertainment&#8221; district to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pdxcaringcommunity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">caring community.<\/a>\u00a0 A second project is intended to change a negative image of our residents to one that is diverse and caring. It got me out of the office and into the streets taking photos of and meeting my neighbors and their dogs. They are published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.101dogspdx.com\/a-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here.\u00a0<\/a>It&#8217;s also about getting support for an urban dog ballpark in our neighborhood.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><br \/>\nInterdependence\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2216\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Interdependence-1-150x97.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"97\" \/>Early in 2017 I came to the realization that the <strong>soul of sustainability<\/strong> lies within our interdependence or oneness or kinship. It was a<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"> lesson I was learning locally within my community where I identify as a sustainability advocate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">I live in Portland&#8217;s Caring Community, Old Town Chinatown, where a majority, 57% of the housing is dedicated to the homeless in the form of supportive care housing and shelter beds.\u00a0 Adopted in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralcityconcern.org\/ccc\">1970&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0the housing landscape reflects a model of care that works and is overworked as homelessness increases.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">This is also a place with a high crime rate for narcotic\/drug offenses and assaults in a time when our police force is understaffed and those trained to &#8220;coordinate the response of Law Enforcement and to aid people in behavioral crisis resulting from known or suspected mental illness and or drug and alcohol addiction&#8221; are too few. In Portland this is the mission of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandoregon.gov\/police\/index.cfm?&amp;c=62135\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Behavioral Health Unit<\/a> within the Police Bureau.\u00a0 A model of policing that works for the situation we find ourselves in &#8211; the solution is recovery not jail.\u00a0 They too are overworked.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cThe biggest deficit that we have in our society and in the world <\/em><em>right now\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 is an empathy deficit. We are in great need of people being able to stand in somebody else&#8217;s shoes and see the world through their eyes.\u201d \u2013 Barack Obama<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>Under the banner of sustainability advocate I began to integrate the personal with the professional and in the process discovered that interdependence is the foundation, the principle for acting on behalf of future generations and getting to the heart of<\/div>\n<div>things be they local or global.\u00a0 \u00a0I came to think of it as the soul of sustainability.\u00a0 It also places empathy at the center of all action-taking as we express compassion through our work.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;This problem of addiction is not only a health crisis but a spiritual crisis. <\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The situation worsens when society sees addiction as a shameful condition\u00a0\u2014\u00a0those in need don\u2019t reach out to others for help;\u00a0the community doesn&#8217;t provide treatment services.\u201d\u00a0 \u2013 Paul Steinbroner<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Health and Spiritual Crisis<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 1rem;\">And then came this opioid epidemic. My filmmaker friend, Paul Steinbroner, needed some marketing help in getting his latest film project, <\/span>Called From Darkness<span style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 1rem;\">, into distribution.\u00a0 Paul heads up a publishing and distribution company specializing in multi-media projects related to addiction, neuropharmacology, and brain chemistry.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em style=\"font-size: 1.14286rem; text-align: center;\"><span class=\"\">&#8220;The torrent of people who have died in the opioid crisis has transfixed and horrified the nation,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">with overdose now\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/09\/02\/upshot\/fentanyl-drug-overdose-deaths.html?_r=0\">the leading cause of death for Americans under 50.<\/a>&#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><strong><span class=\"\">The Epidemic<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">There is a great need for increasing awareness about the epidemic and educating people who may see themselves as disconnected, but know by feel that the situation calls for all hands on deck<\/span><span class=\"\">. Nearly all of us are connected to someone &#8211; family member, friend, colleague &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">who is directly affected by addiction and often homeless on the street.\u00a0 One doesn&#8217;t have to live in a neighborhood tha<\/span><span class=\"\">t cares for the sheltered and unsheltered to know <\/span><span class=\"\">that a majority of our homeless have a mental illness and\/or drug addiction. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"\">In\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">Portland, of the 4,177 homeless people counted, 2,527 (60.5%) reported living with <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"\">one or more disability, including a mental disability, chronic physical condition, and\/or a substance-use disorder.\u00a0The number of people with disabling conditions increased by <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"\"><em>16.1 percent<\/em> between the 2015 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/566631e8c21b864679fff4de\/t\/59ee2e7a5ffd207c6e7b41a0\/1508781707710\/PSU+2017+Point-In-Time_FINAL_%28Interactive%29+%281%29+%281%29.pdf\">2017 Point-In-time<\/a> counts.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Addiction as a healthcare issue is in the realm of social sustainability. It&#8217;s of sizable proportions: an epidemic, possibly resulting in hundred of thousands of deaths with economic repercussions that could bankrupt our communities; making the poorest of neighborhoods <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2217\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/addictioncycle-150x119.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"154\" height=\"122\" \/>unlivable; and turning family life into a nightmare.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The New Yor<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">k<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/21\/us\/opioid-addiction-treatment-families.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;clickSource=story-heading&amp;module=photo-spot-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news\">article<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><i class=\"\">1 Son, 4 Overdoses, 6 Hours, <\/i>makes this point:<i class=\"\"> &#8220;<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Drug deaths draw the most notice, but more addicted people live than die. For\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">them and their families, life can be a relentless cycle of worry, hope and chaos.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><br \/>\nStart Here<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>I have observed that to start from the point of &#8220;not me, but them&#8221; or to draw a line between the personal and the professional, leaving &#8220;solutions&#8221;\u00a0 to those in the healthcare sector doesn&#8217;t lead to furthering sustainability principles.\u00a0 I find framing the challenge from the principle of inter-<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2204\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/51X9jU3SvBL._AC_US218_-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/51X9jU3SvBL._AC_US218_-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/51X9jU3SvBL._AC_US218_.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>connection and thinking of it as going to the soul of sustainability works.
