{"id":1985,"date":"2015-03-30T10:52:05","date_gmt":"2015-03-30T17:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?p=1985"},"modified":"2015-03-30T13:10:32","modified_gmt":"2015-03-30T20:10:32","slug":"sustainability-with-resiliency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?p=1985","title":{"rendered":"Sustainability with Resiliency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sustainability <strong>with <\/strong>resiliency is how I think about these two important concepts working together.\u00a0\u00a0Which is why I started to pay more attention to those talking about resiliency and \u00a0then\u00a0created\u00a0a new Resiliency and Communities collection on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/How_to_Build_Better_More_Resilient_Cities_with_Judith_Rosin\/64\/25759\" target=\"_blank\">EarthSayers.tv,<\/a> voices of sustainability. \u00a0At first, I recognized that there is quite a bit out there on personal resiliency. Three years ago I interviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/Resiliency_and_Sustainability_by_Raz_Mason\/86\/21477\" target=\"_blank\">Raz Mason<\/a>, who is trained as a chaplain, on the topic of sustainability <strong>and<\/strong> resiliency. Although I didn&#8217;t agree with her that the term sustainability suggests a steady state, I was impressed how she talks about resiliency as it relates to the individual and family.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/book.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1986\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/book.png\" alt=\"book\" width=\"220\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/book.png 220w, https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/book-194x300.png 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a>However, in\u00a0terms of community resiliency, I was moved to action by the voice of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.100resilientcities.org\/author\/judith-rodin#\/-_\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.100resilientcities.org\/author\/judith-rodin#\/-_\/\">Dr. Judith Rodin<\/a>, President of the Rockefeller Foundation, author of The <em>Resilience Dividend,<\/em> and one of the world&#8217;s leading public thinkers. She was the first voice added to the\u00a0<strong>Resiliency and Communities <\/strong>special collection on EarthSayers.tv.\u00a0\u00a0I discovered that resiliency at the community level incorporates what we traditionally call emergency management yet moves us towards being better able <em>to plan for <\/em>and then recover from not only the weather, but social and economic shocks.<br \/>\nAnd exactly how do we do resiliency planning and investment, to prepare,\u00a0when crisis seems to be the new normal? \u00a0How do we revitalize, not just build back our communities?<br \/>\nWell, I recommend you give a listen to Dr. Rodin&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/How_to_Build_Better_More_Resilient_Cities_with_Judith_Rosin\/64\/25759\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/How_to_Build_Better_More_Resilient_Cities_with_Judith_Rosin\/64\/25759\">hour long discussion <\/a>brought to us by The RSA, a London based, British organization committed to finding practical solutions to today&#8217;s social challenges. I let our local emergency management director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandoregon.gov\/pbem\/article\/409875\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandoregon.gov\/pbem\/article\/409875\">Carmen Merlo<\/a>, know that I had heard Dr. Rodin and was very supportive of Ms. Merlo being Portland&#8217;s first Chief Resiliency Officer, a CRO being a recommendation from Dr. Rodin&#8217;s experience with the Rockefeller\u00a0project, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.100resilientcities.org\/author\/judith-rodin#\/-_\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.100resilientcities.org\/author\/judith-rodin#\/-_\/\">100 Resilient Cities.<\/a><br \/>\nOur worldview influences the actions we take and so it&#8217;s possible that with crisis being the new normal we all are hearing the call to action to bring resiliency planning to our cities and towns, making it part of every sustainability plan, program, bureau and initiative.
