mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">First, let me raise a few more questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1572\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?attachment_id=1572\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1572\" title=\"greentoes\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/greentoes.png\" alt=\"greentoes\" width=\"100\" height=\"52\" \/><\/a>Will we continue to talk about the changes in climate, climate variability, warming temperatures, extreme weather, exceptional drought, or Hurricane Sandy, but not use the term climate change so we as sustainability advocates don\u2019t step on anyone\u2019s toes?\u00a0 Why are <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">we targeting the 12,000 folks a month using Google to search on, say, climate variability, only a fourth of them from the United States and not the<\/span><\/span> estimated <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">2,240,000 citizens searching monthly using the term, climate change, 30% of them in the United States<strong>?<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">Should we even care about the 3,600 searchers using the term climate change hoax, considerably less than the 18,000 wanting information on the global warming hoax, a majority of these searchers, 66%, being from the United States?\u00a0 Are we not at the back of the pack addressing the stragglers when we fail to title, describe, and tag properly our papers, blog posts, reports, and videos addressing global warming and climate change?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1582\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?attachment_id=1582\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1582\" title=\"Tuesday June 23 Google Spike\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Tuesday-June-23-Google-Spike-300x130.png\" alt=\"Tuesday June 23 Google Spike\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Tuesday-June-23-Google-Spike-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Tuesday-June-23-Google-Spike.png 456w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The mainstream media appears to be in the back somewhere.\u00a0 When on June 25th the President of the United States makes a <a title=\"President Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/President_Obama_Speaks_on_Climate_Change_June_2013\/32\/24741\" target=\"_blank\">major address on climate change<\/a> it doesn\u2019t register on the dial with the press, but it does cause a spike in search traffic, so the Web part of the awareness cycle is working even if TV isn&#8217;t.\u00a0 We need both.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">Just how much of a snoozer was the President&#8217;s speech in terms of \u201cnews\u201d was discussed by Bill Moyers and Marty Kaplan, the <\/span><span class=\"st\">Norman Lear Professor of Entertainment, Media and Society.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\"> <a title=\"Mart Kaplan and Bil  Moyers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/And_They_Just_Find_Climate_Change_a_Snooze_by_Marty_Kaplan\/32\/24743\">Here <\/a>is a four-minute video clip of their conversation. In the video see how Fox News used a smidgen of the President\u2019s speech as a segue way to the author of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Red Hot Lies<\/em> &#8211; a lesson in distraction and manipulation.\u00a0 Bill Moyers references an <a title=\"Think Progress\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2013\/07\/01\/2236101\/infographic-sunday-news-shows-ignored-obamas-climate-plan-but-late-night-comics-picked-up-the-slack\/?mobile=nc\">infographic<\/a> by Think Progress that sums it all up as in zero seconds for major programs.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">In the case of building awareness, no news is <strong>not<\/strong> good news. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">Are people afraid to talk directly about climate change? Some may have a good reason to be afraid. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">There are reports of climatologists loosing jobs because they expressed a belief in climate change, or didn&#8217;t, depending on the political climate in their State or their boss. \u00a0 For a flavor of the pressures professionals can find themselves under <a title=\" This American Life #495\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thisamericanlife.org\/radio-archives\/episode\/495\/hot-in-my-backyardhttp:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\">listen to <em>This American Life<\/em>,<\/a> podcast 495, <strong><em>Hot In My Backyard<\/em><\/strong>, May 13, 2013 featuring the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">story of Colorado\u2019s State Climatologist, Nolan Doesken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">Three years ago I wrote a <a title=\"Sustainability Advocate\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?p=298\">blog post<\/a> citing<\/span> Elizabeth Kolbert reporting in <em>the The New Yorker<\/em> \u201ca quarter of the TV weather-casters AGREE with the statement \u2018global  warming is a scam,\u2019 and nearly two-thirds believe that, if warming is  occurring, it is caused mostly by natural change.\u201d While I can&#8217;t find a study to confirm a shift in the thinking of these folks over the last three years I can appreciate this headline on the Weather Channel last week (<span>Jul 24, 2013) as a sign of a shift, an increasing awareness:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;Poison Ivy is Growing Out of Control, Thanks to Climate Change&#8221;<span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\"> <\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1584\" style=\"width: 110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1584\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?attachment_id=1584\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1584\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1584 \" title=\"tn_19650\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/tn_196501.png\" alt=\"tn_19650\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robinson<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">Fortunately, business leaders such as <\/span>General Motor&#8217;s Mike Robinson, Vice President of Sustainability and Global Regulatory Affairs are openly discussing the importance of preventing climate change. In <a title=\"Mike Robinson of GM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/On_the_Climate_Change_Reality_by_Mike_Robinson_of_GM\/32\/24793http:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\">this video<\/a> posted by 3BL Media Mike talks about the steps GM is taking to stop climate change and why it is important to address it. The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS)  hosted a panel, <em>Business in the Age of Climate Change<\/em> with leaders from the Ford Motor Company and the WWF (<a title=\"Business in the Age of Climate Change\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/Business_in_the_Age_of_Climate_Change_at_NAIAS\/32\/24812\" target=\"_blank\">video here<\/a>).\u00a0 Elected officials including President Obama are stepping up to the plate such as Maryland Governor Martin O&#8217;Malley&#8217;s <a title=\"Governor Martin O'Malley\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/Climate_Change_Summit_by_State_of_Maryland\/32\/24810\" target=\"_blank\">presentation <\/a>at a state-wide Climate Change Summit, and Mayor Bloomberg&#8221;s <a title=\"Mayor Bloomberg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/A_Stronger_More_Resilient_New_York_by_Mayor_Bloomberg\/32\/24811\" target=\"_blank\">speech<\/a>, &#8220;A Stronger, More Resilient New York.&#8221; <span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: Helvetica;\">GM Works with <a title=\"Ceres\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ceres.org\/issues\/climate-changehttp:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ceres<\/a>, <\/span>an advocacy .org for sustainability leadership, \u201cto reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and increase investment in a clean energy economy.&#8221; <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>The Ceres Climate Declaration (<a title=\"Ceres Climate Declaration\" href=\"https:\/\/dl.dropboxusercontent.com\/u\/103681778\/Climate%20Declaration%20Full%20List(1).pdfhttp:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\">full list here<\/a>) signed by GM and a host of companies makes it clear where they stand on climate science.\u00a0 Sign the declaration as an individual and\/or company <a title=\"Clmate Declaration\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ceres.org\/bicep\/climate-declaration\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and join with Levi Strauss &amp; Co., The Weather Company, Method, L&#8217;Oreal, Nike, AMD, Intel and many more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;\"><strong>What\u2019s in a name?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span><\/strong> When it comes to search and using the Web to educate and inspire, terminology is extremely important.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Denial of climate change is what the stragglers are chatting about.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Let\u2019s move on. As sustainability advocates target those active in the learning cycle on climate change (searching on Google and YouTube qualifies an individual as active) to increase awareness and emphasize the connections\u00a0 to the pressing issues of water, energy, and even poison ivy.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s as sustainability advocates emphasize in our conversations and communications the leaders among us who openly discuss climate change and are working to do something about it.
