{"id":1450,"date":"2013-04-30T15:23:31","date_gmt":"2013-04-30T15:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?p=1450"},"modified":"2013-04-30T15:23:36","modified_gmt":"2013-04-30T15:23:36","slug":"alberta-canada-tar-sands-see-for-yourself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?p=1450","title":{"rendered":"Alberta Canada Tar Sands: See for Yourself"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1451\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?attachment_id=1451\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1451\" title=\"Screen shot 2013-04-30 at 9.56.16 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Screen-shot-2013-04-30-at-9.56.16-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen shot 2013-04-30 at 9.56.16 AM\" width=\"110\" height=\"119\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s a place in Indigenous territories and rich in forests, wetlands and huge deposits of bitumen, a tar-like substance that\u2019s turned into oil through complex and energy-intensive processes.\u00a0 You might have heard about the Tar Sands in connection with expanding the Keystone XL pipeline connecting Alberta, Canada with communities throughout the States of Montana, South  Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. A decision on it is not expected until 2015.<\/p>\n<p>No matter your opinion of the proposal at this point in time,\u00a0 it&#8217;s important you know about the place and what is happening to the indigenous peoples, rich forests and wetlands and why sustainability principles and practices need to be fully engaged now.<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1453\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?attachment_id=1453\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1453\" title=\"images-1\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/images-1.jpg\" alt=\"images-1\" width=\"144\" height=\"105\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last Friday on <em>NBC Nightly News<\/em> (view <a title=\"NBC Nightly News\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/video\/nightly-news\/51682005\/#51682005\" target=\"_blank\">here)<\/a> the scale of extraction was brought home to a large audience.\u00a0 For our part, we started a special collection on EarthSayers.tv entitled <a title=\"Canada's Oil Sands\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/Albertas_Oil_Sands_People_and_Power_News_12_Mar_08\/67\/24558\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Alberta Canada Tar Sands<\/em><\/a>, and organized it not as an environmental or social or economic sustainability category but more simply as a place.\u00a0 A place to begin a journey of education and, ultimately, action that results in consideration of the 3BL of planet, people, and prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>The collection will grow over time, but is now seeded with an array of video programs to include news programs from five years ago to this April, a TEDx talk by photographer Garth Lenz on the <a title=\"Garth Lenz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/The_True_Cost_of_Oil_Tar_Sands_by_Garth_Lenz\/67\/22580\" target=\"_blank\"><em>True Cost of Oil<\/em><\/a>, blogger MrEnergyCzar, and more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In a radio interview, <a title=\"Edward Burtynsky\" href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsayers.com\/special_collection\/The_Scale_of_It_All_by_Edward_Burtynsky\/67\/21058\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>The Scale of It All,<\/strong><\/em><\/a> renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky specific<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1452\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/?attachment_id=1452\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1452\" title=\"edward\" src=\"https:\/\/earthsayers.tv\/sustainabilityadvocate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/edward.png\" alt=\"edward\" width=\"100\" height=\"91\" \/><\/a>ally addresses his own &#8220;oil epiphany&#8221; and why having children changed his perspective on what is sustainable.
